At this point in Lawrence’s life he was traveling by bike through France, intent on touring these various gothic structures and cathedrals. When he reached the Mediterranean he quoted the Greeks returning from the Trojan War, then promptly sailed for Arabia to continue his study of Saracen fortifications in the Holy Land. Apparently while in Palestine he subsisted on Turkish delights and coffee to the point of being ill.
